Death of Trayvon Martin: One-year anniversary

GlobalPost

There is a small sidewalk memorial in Sanford, Florida, marking the spot where an unarmed black teenager named Trayvon Martin was shot dead one year ago today, Feb. 26.

The neighborhood watch captain who fired the gun, George Zimmerman, 28, is accused of second-degree murder and will stand trial June 10, according to CNN.

"It's just too much senseless violence; it's overwhelming the homes right now," Tracy Martin, Trayvon's mother, told Piers Morgan on Monday while talking about recent tragedies like the Newtown massacre. "We, as parents, certainly feel the pain."

Trayvon's death sparked nation-wide outage last year, and high profile civil rights leaders like Rev. Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton, along with thousands across the country, spoke out against the shooting.
