Arrest made in mugging, blinding of British diplomat George Fergusson in London

A man was arrested in London today in connection with Friday’s mugging and assault which left a British diplomat blind in one eye, according to The Associated Press.

Fergusson, 56, the next governor of Bermuda, was walking the Hammersmith area of West London on Friday when he was attacked and robbed.

Fergusson walked to a hospital but doctors were unable to save the sight in his left eye.

The diplomat has previously been British ambassador to New Zealand and Samoa and served as governor of Pitcairn Island.

According to the AP, a 29-year-old man was arrested today on suspicion of robbery and was in police custody in West London. The news agency said police believed the attacker had no motive beyond robbery.

According to Sky News, a Metropolitan Police spokesman said, “The 56-year-old man was assaulted and robbed at around 7.30pm on Friday, April 20, while walking in Margravine Cemetery and Park, also known as Hammersmith Cemetery.”

"A small quantity of cash was taken and, at this early stage, officers are satisfied that robbery was the only motive.”

Sky News cited unidentified reports as saying that Fergusson “was taking a short cut through the cemetery to get to a dinner party, and was attacked after getting out his mobile phone to check the address of his hosts.”
