The email invitation sent to the press read “It’s almost here” on a white background with a big number 12, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The event is scheduled for 10 a.m. PT on Sept. 12 at San Francisco's Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Theater.

A new iPhone announcement has been rumored for this date since July, with others predicting a Sept. 21 launch. Apple typically makes new product announcements in the fall, although company officials have been mum on any speculation.

The iPhone 5 is believed to come with a larger screen, 4G LTE support, the 4FF's "nano" SIM standard and possibly a new dock connector, according to Arts Technica.

In July, the Chinese repair site iLab released photos of what it claimed was the iPhone5 built with leaked parts.
