This “prominence eruption” on the surface of the sun was captured by NASA Solar Dynamics Observatory.
If the sun could tango, this is what it would look like.
Instruments aboard NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory recently captured stunning video of a massive explosion on the surface of the sun.
The footage shows strands of plasma shifting back and forth, almost as if in a dance, before erupting into space.
According to NASA, the suspended plasma is being pulled and stretched by competing magnetic forces until something triggers the dramatic breakaway.
Such activity is common on the sun, but only recently are astronomers able to view it in such detail.
