Google Reader will be extinct by July (VIDEO)

Google Reader, R.I.P.

Google's popular RSS feed tool will be shutting down as of July 1, the tech giant announced Thursday.

Though they will not be launching an alternative, the company has set up "Google Takeout," which will allow users to export their data and subscriptions to another RSS feed.

"We launched Google Reader in 2005 in an effort to make it easy for people to discover and keep tabs on their favorite websites," Google said in a statement. "While the product has a loyal following, over the years usage has declined."

Reader is not the only product on the chopping block: the company has cut 70 products and services as part of its "spring cleaning" that began in 2011.

"These changes are never easy," the statement added. "But by focusing our efforts, we can concentrate on building great products that really help in their lives."

As Forbes' Tim Worstall noted,

It’s here that we see…one of the reasons why Google is so successful as a company. They’ll try just about anything but if they cannot make a profit, however successful whatever it is in other ways, they’ll pull the plug. They’re just not romantic about these things: they’re very hard headed.

Of course, Google's exit from the RSS game opens up room for its competitors to grow and new innovators to step in. This IS the world of technology, after all. Feedly, Newsblur, and other names are already being thrown around on tech blogs as replacements.

Some people, however, are still going through the emotions of losing a loved service.

"Now those users are progressing through the Seven Stages of Internet Grief: denial, tweeting, anger, tweeting, bargaining, tweeting, and acceptance, or more precisely, figuring out a new way to get a satisfying news fix," wrote Bloomberg's Jim Aley
