Energy drinks raise blood pressure, alter heartbeat, study shows

A new study shows that energy drinks may be bad for your heart.

Researchers at USAF Travis Air Force Base's Medical Center found that drinks like Red Bull and Monster may increase blood pressure and change your heartbeat.

The findings come amidst growing controversy about the ill effects of energy drinks.

The Food and Drug Administration is currently investigating the link between the caffeinated, sugary beverages and 13 deaths tied to 5-hour Energy drinks.

A 13-year old girl died after consuming two 24-ounce Monster energy drinks in one day.

The newest study looks at evidence from seven previous studies, which indicate the drinks can harm the heart.

Participants in the study were between the ages of 18 and 45.

Researchers found that drinking an energy drink immediately prolonged something called the QT interval.

Long intervals have been been associated with heart arrythmia and sudden cardiac arrest.

The findings were presented at the American Heart Association's meeting in New Orleans this week.
