Inside Gay Pakistan

It’s a country where sex outside marriage is illegal, and gay sexual activity is theoretically punishable by death. Freelance reporter Mobeen Azhar has just completed a documentary on gay subcultures in Pakistan.

Azhar has discovered a much more complex reality; for some sections of society, gay life is thriving, and is tacitly tolerated. However, you still can’t self-identify as gay, and having an open relationship is strictly forbidden.

Anchor Marco Werman speaks with Azhar about the gay subculture he explored in Pakistan and the men whom he spoke with. The documentary airs this week on the BBC World Service.
