Randy Newman

Studio 360

In the last decade, Newman has made new fans writing scores for Pixar movies. But before that, he was confounding listeners with his cheerfully bitter piano songs. After a 9-year hiatus, he’s put out a new record — "Harps and Angels," and mixed in some politics too.

Newman talks with "Studio 360’s" Kurt Andersen about his career writing music, scoring Pixar movies, and about the infamous "Short People," which he calls a hit that hurt his career.

Newman also plays a few numbers live in the studio.

PRI’s Peabody Award-winning "Studio 360 with Kurt Andersen" from WNYC is public radio’s smart and surprising guide to what’s happening in pop culture and the arts. Each week, Kurt Andersen introduces you to the people who are creating and shaping our culture. Life is busy — so let "Studio 360" steer you to the must-see movie this weekend, the next book for your nightstand, or the song that will change your life.

Do you support journalism that strengthens our democracy?

At The World, we believe strongly that human-centered journalism is at the heart of an informed public and a strong democracy. We see democracy and journalism as two sides of the same coin. If you care about one, it is imperative to care about the other.

Every day, our nonprofit newsroom seeks to inform and empower listeners and hold the powerful accountable. Neither would be possible without the support of listeners like you. If you believe in our work, will you give today? We need your help now more than ever!
