Hard-Hit Rockaways Try to Recover from Hurricane Sandy

The Takeaway

Far Rockaway, Queens, one of New York’s most treasured beach communities, was also one of the most devastated areas of New York City in Hurricane Sandy.
Floods overtook many neighborhoods, damaging roads and the beach boardwalk. The Rockaway Peninsula is also home to one of the worst tragedies from the storm: Breezy Point, where 110 homes burned to the ground when a fire broke out and spread rapidly by the storm’s wind.
Phillip Goldfeder is the New York State Assemblyman from the Far Rockaways and a resident of the community. Jillienne Jordan lived through a terrifying hurricane rescue from her home in the Far Rockaway neighborhood of Belle Harbor.
