Garment Factory Collapses in Bangladesh

The Takeaway

Rescue workers in Bangladesh are continuing to search for survivors of a collapsed building just outside the capital. At least 200 people have died, and others are believed to still be trapped inside what is left of the building.
The Rana Plaza building is located in an industrial suburb of Bangladesh’s capital, Dhaka. It was home to a number of factories that made clothes for American and European consumers.
The building collapse has left many asking questions about the reasons behind Bangladesh’s poor safety standards
Edward Hertzman is publisher of the Sourcing Journal – a trade publication. He believes that pressure from United States retailers to keep costs low is part of the problem that led to the unsafe conditions in the building in the first place.
