The future of journalism: outsourcing to India?

The Takeaway

Brayden Simms, a copy editor at the Miami Herald was recently laid of and had his position outsourced to India. He is one of 250 staff to be eliminated in a 10 percent personnel cut by the owner of the Miami Herald, McClatchy Co.

Roy Peter Clark, senior scholar at the Poynter Institute, says it’s a controversial issue in newsrooms even as industry woes continue. He says that institutional knowledge and cultural context are not something that can easily be outsourced.

"The Takeaway" is PRI’s new national morning news program, delivering the news and analysis you need to catch up, start your day, and prepare for what’s ahead. The show is a co-production of WNYC and PRI, in editorial collaboration with the BBC, The New York Times Radio, and WGBH.
