MP says there’s nothing new about the idea of talks with the Taliban, but the sense of urgency behind this is new: the Afghan president has long said they’d talk with the Taliban as long as they accept the new Afghan constitution. Now the Taliban haven’t accepted that, but there are midlevel Taliban fighters who are tired and might turn to the Afghan government. The Taliban leader said the only way it’d consider this if foreign troops depart from the country. (what else might the Taliban demand?) You’d expect demands of a more conservative Islamic government, but it’s not just the Taliban, there are two or three other major players in the Afghan insurgency, such as Al Qaeda and other Mujahadeen fighters.
