In his speech last night, President Obama said that the U.S.’s original goal of driving al-Qaida out of Afghanistan has largely been achieved, and that “our mission will be changed from combat to support” in the country. He said that by 2014, he expects all U.S. troops to have returned home, and that “the Afghan people will be responsible for their own security.” Obama also said that the cost of the Afghanistan War was a factor in his decision to begin bringing home troops.
