Top of the Hour: Obama to Ask Syrian President to Step Down, Morning Headlines

The Takeaway

President Obama is expected to make an explicit call today for Syrian President Bashar Assad to leave power.  In addition, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will announce new sanctions against the Syrian regime.  A United Nations spokesman says Assad called Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon this morning and told the Secretary General that the military and police operations had stopped.  But reports coming from the port city of Latakia this morning contradict that.  Even former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has reportedly called on Assad to step down.
