US and Chinese officials are trading verbal volleys over a maritime incident in the South China Sea. Two days ago, a US Navy mapping ship was confronted there by Chinese vessels. The Pentagon accuses the Chinese ships of surrounding and harassing the USNS Impeccable in international waters.

China said today the Impeccable violated international law in the South China Sea and that it was operating there without China’s permission.

International disagreements are not new to the South China Sea.

There are territorial disputes over many of the 200 or so small islands and reefs there.
