Cuba and Russia rekindle relationship

A new Russian Orthodox cathedral was recently consecrated in Cuba and Raul Castro was the guest of honor. This cathedral symbolizes the renewed ties between these former Cold War allies. Religion is now seen as a way of bringing these countries together. This Russian MP says Russia and Cuba have been friends for a long time and they now pray America ends the embargo towards Cuba. For much of the Cold War, Cuba was one of Russia’s strategic allies. Now in response to the controversial missile defense shield in Europe, there’s been talk of Moscow restoring military cooperation with Cuba. But this analyst doesn’t think Russia and Cuba will go that far. Russia lags well behind other countries when it comes to trade with Cuba. But that could change as Moscow and Havana continue to reestablish their old ties.
