China and Japan play ball

China and Japan don’t always display good sportsmanship when their respective sports teams play each other, but Chinese fans were remarkably well-behaved today as their Olympic baseball team was trounced by Japan. The World’s Mary Kay Magistad reports.

The Japan vs. China baseball game ended abruptly and mercifully because Japan was up by so much. The two teams shook hands on the field, and then the fans went home. Both fans refrained from chanting nationalist chants. There was no booing or hissing. At times, the Chinese pitchers were aggressive towards the Japanese batters, hitting them a few times, but aside from that it was a civil game and exactly the kind of civil game the Chinese government wanted.
