Calpernia Addams

Fair Game
The World

It’s kind of an understatement to say that Calpernia Addams has lived a full life – she’s one of the most visible transsexuals in the world, she served as a field medical combat specialist in the Navy and with the Marines during the Gulf War, she was one of the top showgirls in the state of Tennessee, and she produced an all-transsexual benefit performance of The Vagina Monologues. A painful chapter of her life – which she doesn’t really like to talk about – was dramatized in the Emmy-nominated Showtime movie Soldier’s Girl. It tells the story of her former boyfriend – an Army private – who was murdered by fellow soldiers when they found out about his relationship with her. Calpernia Addams is on Fair Game with Faith Salie to talk about her latest project, a dating show called Transamerican Love Story, which airs on the Logo network.

Do you support journalism that strengthens our democracy?

At The World, we believe strongly that human-centered journalism is at the heart of an informed public and a strong democracy. We see democracy and journalism as two sides of the same coin. If you care about one, it is imperative to care about the other.

Every day, our nonprofit newsroom seeks to inform and empower listeners and hold the powerful accountable. Neither would be possible without the support of listeners like you. If you believe in our work, will you give today? We need your help now more than ever!
