Russian President Vladimir Putin’s political party has unanimously nominated him to be their presidential candidate for the upcoming election in March 2024. The nomination comes amid Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, heavy political repression and heightened censorship.
Vladimir Putin is widely expected to win re-election as president on Sunday. And he can probably do it without fraud. But in the wake of what many say were very fraudulent elections in December, many Russians are volunteering to monitor the votes coming in.
Thousands of protesters gathered in Moscow on Monday over accusations that Prime Minister Vladimir Putin’s United Russia party engaged in fraud in recent parliamentary elections. Observers say the witnessed flagrant ballot box stuffing, among other violations. United Russia maintained its majority in the elections, but lost two-thirds of its control of Parliament.
