For over a year now, the front line in the war between Russia and Ukraine hasn’t moved very much. Russia still occupies about 18% of Ukrainian territory. For Ukrainians living under Russian occupation, security and safety is a major concern. So, many Ukrainians have chosen to flee.
The Green Road project has helped over 3,000 displaced Ukrainians find safe housing in ecovillages throughout Ukraine and across Europe — including the idyllic, rural community of Hallingelille, just outside of Ringsted, in Denmark. The project is a testament to the power of international friendships and networks in times of crisis.
In late February of 2022, even as Russian troops moved closer to Ukraine’s border and all signs pointed to war, many Ukrainians woke up in disbelief as tanks started to roll into their country. Several Ukrainians shared their memories of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine — before and after — which happened a year ago this week.
