Laurie Metcalf is arguably best known for her work on “Roseanne” — she played Roseanne's neurotic sister, Jackie Harris, throughout the show’s original nine season run. Since then, she’s received six Emmy nominations, an Academy Award nomination (for “Lady Bird”) and her first Tony Award (for “A Doll’s House, Part 2”).
She’s back in the Conner household for the newly-rebooted “Roseanne” on ABC. Metcalf also returns to the stage for “Three Tall Women,” Edward Albee’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play.
Kurt Andersen talks to Laurie Metcalf about the two revivals and finding common ground with her characters — from Jackie’s politics in “Roseanne” to the outlook on life and aging in “Three Tall Women.”
“I'm in that sweet spot right now,” she says, paraphrasing her character. “Half of being adult done and the rest to look forward to."
