Yemen: Protesters killed in Taiz crackdown

GlobalPost

Yemeni security forces opened fire on protesters in the restive southern city Taiz on Monday, killing at least six and wounding hundreds, reports CNN, citing witnesses.

Security forces used live ammunition, batons and tear gas against anti-regime protesters camping around the Taiz Education Office, DPA reports, adding that teachers protesting salary cuts were among the casualties.

On Sunday, two protesters were reportedly killed in Taiz amid a violent government crackdown on opponents of the government of President Ali Abdullah Saleh.

Similar clashes reportedly occurred in al-Hodiedah, a city on the Red Sea, and in Dhammar.

The Financial Times reports that the renewed violence coincides with an opposition warning that it will withdraw its support of a transition plan proposed by the Gulf Co-operation Council if Saleh does not commit to the agreement personally.

More than a month of intense international mediation of Yemen’s political crisis has failed to force Saleh to end his 32-year rule.
