Arnold Schwarzenegger has talked about his separation from his longtime wife, Maria Shriver, at an event in Los Angeles.
“We both love each other very much … and we are taking it one day at a time,” he reportedly said, noting that he had spoken to her just an hour earlier.
The New York Daily News reports that Shriver walked out on Schwarzenegger a few weeks ago, but the couple still sees each other "all the time."
But gossip website TMZ reports that the split is not quite so amicable, and that Shriver was contemplating separation for years as she found Schwarzenegger “impossible” to live with.
The Arnie-Maria Split jokes started soon after Schwarzenegger and Shriver announced their separation Monday.
Arnold Schwarzenegger, an Austrian-born movie star turned governor of California, and Maria Shriver, a journalist and member of the powerful Kennedy family, were married for 25 years. The couple has four children.
Shriver, 55, and Schwarzenegger, 63, are already living apart, according to Forbes, which ranks Shriver as one of the most powerful women in the world.
In a joint statement, they said: “This has been a time of great personal and professional transition for each of us. After a great deal of thought, reflection, discussion, and prayer, we came to this decision together.”
CBS News noted that Shriver was spotted over the weekend without her wedding ring, while the Atlantic pointed out that Schwarzenegger had not talked to his wife about including her in his Governator comic/animated series, which should have been a red flag.
Time gives a timeline of the couple's relationship — from their introduction at a charity tennis tournament to January this year, when Schwarzenegger ended his seven-year term as California governor — in an effort to pinpoint what went wrong.
Twitter was abuzz with movie puns related to the split, according to Hollywood reporter.
"Maria Shriver and Arnold Schwarzenegger R getting divorced. Let me guess after Maria kicked Arnold out the house Arnold replied I'll be back," quipped Holy_Reyes, according to the Reporter.
Shann318 Tweeted, "Schwarzenegger marriage has reached the "End of Days". I hope there is no "Collateral Damage" and he doesn't get a "Raw Deal". :)"
On a Facebook page devoted to Shriver, fans offered blessings and good wishes.
The separation also focused new attention on a YouTube video Shriver made earlier this year. The video, posted March 28, has Shriver facing a camera to talk about the stresses of making a major transition in one's life.
