Wisconsin recall election results: Democratic state senators survive (VIDEO)

Two Democratic state senators won recall elections in Wisconsin Tuesday, enabling them to keep their seats, according to unofficial results released by the Wisconsin Government Accountability Board, CNN reports.

The recall elections for Democratic incumbents, Sen. Jim Holperin and Sen. Bob Wirch, was the latest round in a series of recalls in Wisconsin this summer, it states.

Six Republican senators were the subject of recall elections last week. Four of the six survived. In another recall, a Democratic senator also kept his seat.

The Democrats were hoping the elections would enable them to take control of the state Senate, which had been controlled by the Republicans with a 19-14 majority. However, the elections dashed such hopes for the Democrats. The Republicans kept their majority and now have 17 seats; the Democrats have 16.

The recalls come after a battle in Wisconsin last winter that saw the Democratic caucus leave the state for weeks in an attempt to block a measure that would curtail collective bargaining rights for public workers, the New York Times reports. The political battle over the measure led to nine recall elections.
