Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-OH) will give his own speech on the economy one week after President Barack Obama delivers a much-anticipated speech before a joint session of Congress.
The Economic Club of Washington announced Thursday that Boehner will speak at the club on September 15.
A Republican leadership aide told The Hill newspaper that details of the speech would be made available closer to the date. From The Hill:
The speech comes as Republicans move forward with a fall agenda intended to highlight their efforts to help the economy.
House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) this week unveiled the conference’s plans, which included two tax-cut measures and a series of bills intended to pull back on regulations the GOP argues are hurting the economy.
USA Today points out that Boehner has used the Economic Club as a venue before. In May, the Speaker outlined his conditions for raising the debt ceiling in a speech at the Economic Club of New York.
The announcement of Boehner's upcoming speech comes one day after Boehner and Obama tussled over the timing of the president's address. On Wednesday, Obama sent a letter to Boehner asking to address a joint session of Congress at 8 p.m. on September 7, the same night as a Republican presidential debate. Boehner responded by denying the president's request and saying it was his recommendation that "your address be held on the following evening, when we can ensure there will be no parliamentary or logistical impediments that might detract from your remarks."
After some public political back-and-forth, the White House agreed to move the speech to September 8. Obama is expected to discuss job creation and the economy.
September 8 is also the night of the opening game of the National Football League's regular season. A senior administration official told CNN that Obama's speech will take place before the game begins.
