Two Malaysian men who allegedly murdered another man for insulting a woman on Facebook were taken into police custody on Tuesday.

The unidentified suspects, who are believed to be brothers, allegedly bludgeoned Mohamad Amran Romli, 20, with their motorcycle helmets after he reportedly insulted their sister on the social networking site.

"The two men are in a police lock-up. They are being investigated for murder," a police officer in northern Kedah state told AFP news agency.

Malay language daily Berita Harian said the victim suffered severe head injuries and died in hospital on Friday shortly after the attack, which took place behind a supermarket in Kulim town, Kedah state, AFP reported.

Police told the paper Amran had befriended the girl through Facebook, a wildly popular website among young people in the Southeast Asian country.

But their online relationship "turned sour", so Amran posted insulting remarks about the girl and her family, police said.

"She then complained to her brothers who sought to resolve the dispute with Amran," the local police chief was quoted as saying.

"They met behind a supermarket but an altercation broke out and the victim was hit on the head with crash helmets."

More than 43 percent of Malaysia's population, or about 11.4 million people, use Facebook, according to socialbakers.com.
