Iowa's Republican Party has made a tentative agreement to hold is caucuses on Jan. 3, the Des Moines Register reported Friday.
The agreement will be formally voted on next week.
“We had a real clear consensus last night that we want Jan. 3,” Drew Ivers, a member of the Iowa GOP central committee, told the Des Moines Register. He said the agreement was reached during a phone conference Thursday night of the Iowa GOP Central Committee.

CNN reports that a second committee member has confirmed that there is a broad consensus among the committee for Jan. 3.
The move comes before New Hampshire has set its date for a primary, and Iowa is therefore effectively staking its claim to Jan. 3, the Washington Post reports.
"New Hampshire holds its primary on a Tuesday, and state law says it must be set at least seven days before a similar contest. After Nevada set its caucuses for Jan. 14 on Thursday, Jan. 3 became the latest date that would meet both of those criteria for New Hampshire," it states.
