Taxi driver charged after running over man on video (VIDEO)

A Montreal taxi driver was charged Monday in a gruesome hit-and-run after an altercation Sunday night.

The taxi driver, Guercy Edmond, 47, appeared in court Monday charged with assault causing bodily harm, hit-and-run, dangerous driving, among several other charges.

The 23-year-old victim is in hospital in stable condition, according to the Toronto Star, and could be charged along with another man.

The video shows an altercation between a group of youths and a taxi driver in Montreal's Plateau neighborhood.

According to the National Post, as the altercation became heated and the taxi cab was attacked, the driver ran over one of the men.

The man filming the event shouts at the group to stop and that he is filming everything.

After running over the man, the driver fled the scene in his Toyota Camry.

"I asked him what he was accused of and to that he replied, ‘I was attacked,'" said Yves Vaillancourt, the accused's lawyer, according to CTV.

"He did not say, ‘I hit somebody.'"

CTV also reported that a witness said the altercation began when the man slammed the door while getting out of the taxi. Others joined into the fight.

Montreal has about 10,000 taxi drivers, said the Toronto Sun, with about 50 of those each year involved in violent incidents.

Edmond's bail hearing is set for Wednesday.
