Sixto Rodriguez: Famous musician who didn’t know it

GlobalPost

At home in Detriot, he was just a regular guy.

But in South Africa he was a famous musician whose album "At his Best" had sold over 1,000,000 copies.

This is the story of Sixto Rodriguez, the 70's political musician whose strange but true rise to fame is the subject of a documentary called "Searching for Sugar Man."

"In South Africa, he was in the pantheon of rock gods," said Malik Bendjelloul, Director of Searching for Sugarman, according to CNN.

"To us, it was one of the most famous records of all time," said Stephen Segerman, owner of Mabu Vinyl in Cape Town.

When his music career didn't take off Rodriguez began demolition work, totally unaware that millions were listening to his music.
