Ryanair stewardesses caught smuggling nearly $10,000 in cigarettes

Two flight attendants with the Irish airline Ryanair were caught smuggling nearly $10,000 worth of cigarettes in to the UK.

Gemma Phillips, 26, and Adam McEvatt, 28, were stopped by customs at John Lennon Airport, Liverpool, after a flight coming from the Canary Islands, reported the Daily Mail.

They allegedly had about 13,800 cigarettes in their bag.

That is just slightly over the legal amount for vactioners going to the UK, which is 200 cigarettes.

A spokeswoman for the UK border ppolice told Click Liverpool that the  "Two individuals travelling from the Canary Islands carrying excess cigarettes were stopped at Liverpool John Lennon Airport."

"They were arrested on suspicion of being knowingly concerned in the fraudulent evasion of excise duty," they went on to say, reported Irish Times.

"They have since been charged and bailed to return to court on 17 September."

It is not the first time a stewardess has been caught smuggling contraband into the UK.

A Nigerian stewardess flying on Arik Air from Lagos was jailed recently for trying to bring over a quarter million dollars of cocaine into the country, said PM News.
