New York to demolish 200 homes destroyed by Sandy

New York will demolish around 200 homes that were badly damaged by Hurricane Sandy last month. 

The city is moving to bulldoze mostly one- and two-family houses in Staten Island, Brooklyn, and Queens, NBC News reported. 

That count is in addition to another roughly 200 houses that have already been damaged, either by being partially or completely burned down or washed away by flooding. 

The sites will also be cleared of debris, the Associated Press reported. 

City Buildings Commissioner Robert LiMandri told the New York Times that his department is also inspecting an additional 500 damaged buildings, some of which could also be destroyed. 

Decisions about rebuilding the destroyed homes have yet to be made, according to the Times.

FEMA has extended its temporary housing program, which offers hotel or motel rooms to applicants whose houses were damaged by the storm, until December 14, New York 1 reported. 

Hurricane Sandy wrought over $30 billion in damages to the New York and New Jersey areas, as hundreds still remain without power.
