Miami woman dies after 42 years in coma

Ewarda O'Bara was a high school student when she became ill and slipped into a diabetic coma.

For 42 years she lay in a coma, her family keeping a bedside vigil, reading to her and playing music. 

But on Wednesday, she passed away, aged 59, the Miami Herald reported.

O'Bara died five years after the death of her mother who had remained at Edwarda’s side since she slipped into a coma.

“I think my mother said, ‘Come on, let’s go,’ ” sister, Colleen O’Bara, told the Miami Herald.

O'Bara's mother was a devout Catholic, and she said she had felt the presence of the Virgin Mary in Edwarda’s bedroom.

Her daughter received letters and visitors from around the world for over four decades.

The remarkable loyalty inspired author Dr. Wayne Dyer to write a book "A Promise Is A Promise: An Almost Unbelievable Story of a Mother’s Unconditional Love and What It Can Teach Us".
