John Boehner endorses Mitt Romney

Speaker of the House of Representatives John Boehner endorsed presidential candidate Mitt Romney on Tuesday, according to Politico.

"It's clear now Mitt Romney is going to be our nominee," Boehner said, according to AFP. He added, "I will be proud to support Mitt Romney and do everything I can to help him win."

Breaking months of silence on the Republican presidential race, Boehner, who is also the head of the Republican National Convention, said, "I’ve not taken a position on this presidential campaign because, as chairman of the convention, I wanted to make sure all candidates had a fair process and a fair opportunity," according to ABC News.

Speaking at a news conference after meeting with the House Republican Conference, Boehner said, "I think Mitt Romney has a set of economic policies that can put Americans back to work and, frankly, contrast sharply with the failed economic policies of President Obama," according to The New York Times.

The Times noted that Rep. Eric Cantor, the House majority leader, endorsed Romney ahead of the Virginia primary. Romney has also embraced the budget plan passed by the Republicans in the House of representatives, which focuses on cutting government programs and tax rates.

Rival candidate Rick Santorum bowed out of the race last week, but Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul continue to campaign though they have no chance of winning, said the AFP.

Politico noted that Boehner's endorsement is significant for Gingrich as Boehner served in leadership under Gingrich and the two still remain in touch.
