Inauguration fashion: What they wore (PHOTOS)
First lady Michelle Obama, wearing a navy-and-black checkered Thom Browne coat, a dress by the same New York designer, and a cardigan by Reed Krakoff to the Inauguration. The look was finished off with a J. Crew belt and black Reed Krakoff boots.
President Obama's Inauguration was certainly a monumental moment, but let's face it — we've seen it coming for months now.
The real surprises of the day? The fashion, of course.
All eyes were on the First Lady, who debuted fashion-forward bangs and smoky eyes along with a custom navy grid silk topcoat and dress by designer Thom Browne.
“Thom Browne is known for avant-garde menswear,” said fashion consultant and TV personality Tim Gunn, ABC News reported. ”I thought, Mrs. Obama is wearing Thom Browne to the inaugural swearing-in ceremony, but in fact it is magnificent.”
Daughters Sasha and Malia both opted for shades of purple, plum and magenta: Malia chose a J. Crew ensemble, which the younger Obama daughter, Sasha, went more upscale with a purple a Kate Spade coat and dress.
Kelly Clarkson, Eva Longoria, Rahm Emanuel's wife Amy Rule and other guests continued the trend of pinks and purples.
Jill Biden looked elegant in her silken wool charcoal Lela Rose coat with an oversized bow and dress from Neiman Marcus, the New York Times reported.
The coat is made of a shimmering silk and wool fabric, but designer Lela Rose said she was “sure [Biden] is cold. The coat is not all that warm.”
Rose described the bow as very “sophisticated.”
“It was truly a pleasure to dress Mrs. Biden for the inauguration,” Rose told the New York Times. “She’s a classic American beauty, and she wears clothes very elegantly.”
Beyonce played the glamor card perfectly in a black Dior fur coat and Emilio Pucci black velvet gown with Lorrain Schwartz emerald jewelry, according to the National Post. Husband Jay-Z was incredibly dapper in head-to-toe Tom Ford.
It wasn't just the guests on stage who shone: those gathered to watch Obama be sworn in brought their head-to-toe fur, dramatic purples, and fun chapeaux as well.
