Hope Solo fails drug test over Canrenone, issued a warning
Hope Solo, the US soccer team’s goalie, has been issued a public warning after testing positive for Canrenone.
US soccer star Hope Solo has been issued a public warning from the US Anti-Doping Agency after she tested positive for Canrenone, a banned substance, in a urine test on Monday.
USA Today reported that Canrenone, a known diuretic, is classified as a specified substance, meaning that its presence in an athlete's sample can result in a reduced sanction.
Solo has acknowledged that she does in fact take Canrenone but only under doctor's orders. In a statement to ESPN Solo said, "I took a medication prescribed by my personal doctor for pre-menstrual purposes that I did not know contained a diuretic. Once informed of this fact, I immediately cooperated with USADA and shared with them everything they needed to properly conclude that I made an honest mistake, and that the medication did not enhance my performance in any way."
U.S. Soccer also issued a statement expressing its support for Solo. In part it read, "We fully cooperated with USADA during the disciplinary process to ensure it could be resolved quickly. Hope has accepted the public warning for her rule violation."
The Washington Post reported that Solo isn't the first athlete to come under fire for a failed urine test this year. Solo is the 14th athlete to receive a sanction under USOC policies this year.
