Hope Christian School rejects three year-old because his fathers are gay

GlobalPost

A three year-old was denied admittance to Hope Christian School in Albuquerque, N.M. because he has two gay fathers, KOAT-TV reported.

A letter sent to the family offered the school’s rationale:

“Same gender couples are inconsistent with scriptural lifestyle and biblical teachings,” and "Home life doesn't reflect the school's belief of what a biblical family lifestyle is.”

The letter added that because Hope Christian School is private, it is exempt from "excessive government interference in matters of religion," according to KOAT-TV.

And yet, the school will receive over $60,000 dollars from the federal government this year, according to the Huffington Post.

Peter Simonson of the ACLU told KOAT-TV, “We don't think agencies that discriminate or use religion to discriminate should be receiving our federal or government funds.”

As the Huffington Post pointed out, Hope Christian School isn't the first school to make airwaves for faith-based discrimination.

Cathy Samford, a Texas Heritage Christian Academy teacher, was fired after the school discovered she was pregnant and not married.

"I'm not just some teacher that went out to a bar and got pregnant and went back to school saying it's okay," Samford said, according to ABC News. "I was in a committed relationship the whole time and probably would have been married if things had gone differently and this would be a non-situation," she said.
