Great Britain, horrible history of penalty shoot-outs

GlobalPost

This is getting old.

A sick joke, maybe?

Daniel Sturridge missed and Ki Sungyueng scored on the next shot as South Korea elininated host Great Britain in the men's soccer quarter-final at the 2012 London Olympics today in Cardiff, Wales.

South Korea advances after a 2-2 draw (and a 5-4 shootout against GB) to face Brazil in one semifinal at Old Trafford in Manchester on Tuesday.

English soccer supporters, perhaps they can only laugh because this marks the seventh time their team has lost in a penalty shootout at a major soccer tournament.

In case you were wondering, here is a synopsis of England's woes.

1990 World Cup
West German goalie Bobo Illgner saved Stuart Pearce's shot, and Chris Waddle sent his over the crossbar at the 1990 World Cup in Italy.
The Germans went on to beat Argentina in the final while England finished fourth.
It started a long, uncomfortable history for England's penalty takers.

Euro 96
Agony and ecstasy greeted the home supporters at the 1996 European championships in England.
Pearce erased memories of 1990 with a successful kick against Spain while goalie David Seaman stopped Miguel Angel Nadal in the quarter-final. But Gareth Southgate couldn't beat German goalie Andreas Kopke, and Adreas Moller scored the next attempt in the semifinals.
Germany advanced to beat Czech Republic in the final.

1998 World Cup
This time England lost to Argentina in the round of 16 at the 1998 World Cup in France. After a 2-2 draw through regulation, Paul Ince and David Batty each missed.
Unfortunately, England couldn't even find solace by losing to the eventual champions. Argentina lost to the Netherlands in the next round, while France went on to defeat Brazil in the final.

Euro 2004
Against host Portugal in the quarter-finals, David Beckham's effort sailed high and Darius Vassell watched his saved. Worse still, Portuguese goalkeeper Ricardo scored to eliminate England.
Portugal beat the Netherlands in the semifinal, but lost to upstart Greece in the championship game.

2006 World Cup
England and Portugal met for a quarter-final rematch in Germany, but it didn't go much better with a change of scenery.
After a goalless draw, Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher all missed for England during an unimpressive shootout from both teams. Cristiano Ronaldo put a merciful end to everyone's misery (and added to England's).
The Portugese lost in the next round as Italy beat France in the final.

Euro 2012
Italy and England played to a goalless draw through regulation in the quarter-finals of the European championship in Kiev, Ukraine. Riccardo Montolivo's miss gave England early life, but Ashley Young hit the bar and Gianluigi Buffon saved Ashley Cole's shot.
Italy beat Germany in the semis, but lost 4-0 to Spain in the final.
