Google: Apple patent lawsuit dismissed

GlobalPost

Reuters reported Monday that Google Inc. announced the dismissal of a patent lawsuit brought by Apple Inc.

AllThingsD.com reported that it was Google’s Motorola Mobility subsidiary, specifically, against whom the case had been brought. There are multiple legal battles currently being waged between the two mobile giants, according to AllThingsD.

A federal judge dismissed the case, which claimed that "Motorola's patent licensing practices were unfair," Reuters wrote.

In a statement, the Google subsidiary said, according to Reuters:

"Motorola has long offered licensing to our extensive patent portfolio at a reasonable and non-discriminatory rate in line with industry standards. We remain interested in reaching an agreement with Apple."

Apple has not yet commented on the decision, according to reports.

Dow Jones Newswires reported that the dismissal adds "another wrinkle to the ongoing intellectual-property dispute between the Silicon Valley firms."

In other news, Apple paid an income tax rate of only 1.9 percent on its earnings outside the country in its latest fiscal year, according to The Los Angeles Times.

A regulatory filing revealed that Apple paid $713 million in tax on foreign earnings of $36.8 billion in the fiscal year that ended on Sept. 29. The general corporate tax rate in the US is 35 percent.
