Fabrice Muamba was discharged from the London Chest Hospital Monday, a month after going into cardiac arrest during a soccer match, BBC News reported

“I am naturally very pleased to be discharged from the hospital,” 24-year-old Muamba said in a statement, the Washington Post reported. “I would like to take this opportunity to pay tribute to every single member of the staff who played a part in my care."

Muamba, a midfielder for the English Premier League's Bolton Wanderers, collapsed on the field in the middle of a game against Tottenham on March 17, BBC reported. He was technically "dead" for 78 minutes after his heart attack, and had been hospitalized since.

"It is absolutely fantastic news that Fabrice has been discharged from hospital and everyone at the club is delighted," said Bolton's manager Owen Coyle, Sky News reported. "We would also like to add our thanks to the staff at The London Chest Hospital for their care and treatment of Fabrice, which has been outstanding."

Dr Andrew Deaner, the cardiologist who leapt from his seat in the crowd and rushed onto the field to help the soccer player, described Muamba's recovery as "miraculous," according to Sky News.

“Now that I am out of the hospital, I am looking forward to continuing my recovery and spending precious time with my family,” Muamba said in his statement.

However, it remains unknown if Muamba will be able to return to his soccer career, according to BBC.

Muamba's recovery comes as Italy mourned the death of 25-year-old Livorno midfielder Piermario Morosini, who also collapsed from cardiac arrest during a game against Pescara on Saturday.
