A robbery suspect in Dallas climbed into a giant construction crane on the Southern Methodist University campus Monday and threatened to shoot police.

The man is wanted for an early morning carjacking. He climbed onto the crane being used to build campus housing and began hurling his shoes at police and threatened to jump and shoot officers, although police don't know if he has a gun, Dallas TV station DFW reported.

Television footage showed the crane on an empty lot, with the cab higher than the light poles at SMU's nearby football stadium, according to The Associated Press.

Although there are a limited number of people on campus because of the Memorial Day holiday, officials locked down the SMU campus and a nearby shopping center as a precaution.

A helicopter with a sniper on board was headed to the area, also as a precaution, police told Dallas TV station WFAA.

According to police, the man is accused of stealing a truck with a "sharp weapon" early Monday. The truck was later recovered on campus, and a police K-9 led officers to the crane where the man was holed up, according to WFAA.
