Clint Eastwood joins fellow Republicans to support gay marriage

The Obama administration is not the only one throwing its support behind gay marriage.

Actor Clint Eastwood joined some 100 conservatives in signing an amicus brief with the US Supreme Court in favor of extending marriage equality to same-sex couples, ABC News reported.

Eastwood's support for gay marriage comes as the Supreme Court prepares to hear arguments about the constitutionality of Proposition 8 in California.

The American Foundation for Equal Rights, AFER, is challenging California's Proposition 8 ban, which overturned same-sex marriage last year, CBS News said.

The Supreme Court is set to hear oral argument in Hollingsworth v. Perry on March 26. At issue is whether Proposition 8 violates the fourteenth amendment's due process and equal protection clauses, CBS News reported.

On Thursday, Massachusetts' attorney general Martha Coakley filed an amicus brief urging the high court to strike down California’s Proposition 8 saying it “is in clear conflict with our Constitution.”

Thirteen other states, including New York, Illinois, and Maryland, joined Massachusetts in the brief, Boston.com reported.
