Barbara Walters has the chicken pox, after being hospitalized over a week ago for a fall.

Walters, 83, hit her head at a party at the British Embassy the weekend before Obama's inauguration, and a low-grade fever kept her in the hospital.

"You all know that she fell and cut her head 10 days ago, and then was running a temperature, but it turns out it is all the result of a delayed childhood," Whoopi Goldberg, Walters' co-host on the View, said on air Monday morning, ABC News reported. "Barbara has the chickenpox."

"She'd never had it as a child," Whoopi continued. "So now she's been told to rest, she's not allowed any visitors. And we're telling you, Barbara, no scratching."

Most people catch the chicken pox as children, but the disease can be serious in older people due to possible complications like pneumonia, the Associated Press noted

The veteran news anchor thanked "all the people who have called, written and been concerned about me" in a statement read last week on the View, USA Today reported

She was transferred from Washington to a New York area hospital late last week.
