Air Canada passenger finds needle in sandwich on Victoria, B.C. to Toronto flight

An Air Canada passenger found a needle in a sandwich on board a flight from Victoria, British Columbia, to Toronto, the airline said late Tuesday.

Air Canada spokesman Peter Fitzpatrick told the Associated Press that a passenger found what appears to be a sewing needle in a catered sandwich served on the flight. A police investigation is now underway, he said.

Fitzpatrick told the AP that the airline is "working closely with our caterers to ensure heightened security measures have been put in place."

Needles were found in six turkey sandwiches on Delta Air Lines flights from Amsterdam to US cities last month, leaving one passenger with minor injuries to his mouth.

Dutch police are continuing to investigate how the sewing needles got into the sandwiches served on flights to Minneapolis, Atlanta and Seattle. 

Dutch police told the AP that it was too early to rule out a copycat or link with the Air Canada needle-in-sandwich incident.

The FBI is also on the case of how needles ended up in Delta sandwiches, the Los Angeles Times reported.
