Somalis #TweetLiidoPictures to show beauty after beach attack

Mogadishu beach

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — The latest attack by Al Shabaab militants targeted a scenic beachfront restaurant in Mogadishu, a popular place for young Somalis who come to relax by the sea.

Late Thursday, gunmen stormed the Beach View restaurant on Lido beach, opening fire on diners and setting off car bombs. Security forces fought a gun battle for hours with the militants.

At least 17 people were killed in the attack, described by Prime Minister Omar Abdirashid Sharmarke as "barbaric."

More from GlobalPost: 'Mogadishu used to be hell. Now it's coming back to life'

The Al Qaeda-linked Al Shabaab, which claimed responsibility, frequently targets hotels and restaurants in Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia.

But Mogadishu residents are determined to show their resilience, and have taken to Twitter to share photos showing the beauty of their beloved beach.

It looks like a lovely place.
