Mexico City is encouraging its restaurants to remove salt shakers in an effort to curb consumption.
It is estimated that Mexicans consume three times the amount of salt recommended by doctors – even more than Americans.
City officials and the city's restaurant association signed an agreement called "Less Salt, More Health," to remove the shakers from restaurant tables.
"We want to raise awareness of the damage that we do to ourselves when we put salt on our dishes without even tasting the food first," said Armando Ahued, Mexico City's health minister.
Restaurants would only provide extra salt if the customer asked for it.
The new agreement would remain voluntary.
