Harvard panel to look at new approaches to global health

BOSTON — The Forum at the Harvard School of Public Health will host a panel on Friday about how the field of global health is changing — and how it must change in the future. The event is presented in collaboration with GlobalPost and will be live streamed here, on GlobalPost’s Pulse blog, starting at 10 a.m.

In the 21st century, global health has emerged as a priority for governments and organizations around the world. However, as the New York Times reported in 2012, experts say that more holistic approaches to public health are needed in an increasingly "interconnected world."

The panel will look at what is needed to transform the global health agenda through factors including education, innovative financing, and increasing the role of low- and middle-income countries in shaping the future.

Panelists include Julio Frenk, dean of Harvard School of Public Health; Mark Dybul, executive director of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria; and Gordon Brown (via remote connection), UN special envoy for global education and former prime minister of the United Kingdom. The panel will be moderated by Abigail Trafford, former health editor at the Washington Post.
