Egg for sale: A giant egg of an extinct, flightless bird is being auctioned

An egg of an extinct giant bird is to be put up for sale by Christie's auction house.

The egg, larger than a football and said to be bigger than a dinosaur egg, is expected to get nearly $50,000.

It is said to be the largest egg ever laid.

The egg is 100 times the size of your average chicken egg.

It was laid hundreds of years ago by an elephant bird.

Elephant birds were found in Madagascar and stood at about 10 feet tall – weighing up to 800 lbs.

They went extinct due to hunting and through disease.

The auction will occur on April 24.
