Randy Travis' tough times just got a whole lot tougher.
The troubled country singer, 54, was in critical condition at a Texas hospital Monday following complications from viral cardiomyopathy, his publicist told Reuters.
Cardiomyopathy weakens and enlarges the heart, making it more difficult for the muscle to pump blood and sometimes leading to heart failure.
More from GlobalPost: Randy Travis charged with DWI, caught driving naked
Although many times the causes of cardiomyopathy are unknown, one of them can be excessive use of alcohol over many years, according to Mayo Clinic.
Travis has a history of run-ins with the law involving alcohol use, including an arrest on drunken driving charges in Texas last August.
The Grammy winner was naked when cops pulled him over. He pleaded guilty to the charge earlier this year.
Travis was also hospitalized in 2012 following a fight near a church in Plano, Texas.
The singer of hits such as "Forever and Ever, Amen," "On the Other Hand" and "Three Wooden Crosses" was scheduled to perform Wednesday in Deadwood, South Dakota.
