Paul McCartney Plays Free Concert in Mexico City

The World

Nearly 50 years after Beatlemania hit North America, it struck again this week in Mexico City.

Hundreds of thousands of fans turned out Thursday night for Paul McCartney’s free outdoor concert in the Mexican capital.

Organizers also set up giant TV screens for those who couldn’t squeeze into the city’s central plaza, the Zocalo.

Mexico has a running love affair with Sir Paul and the Beatles.

The country holds the current world record for radio air-time for Beatles music: 12 hours weekly.

The BBC’s Will Grant was at last night’s concert and tells Marco Werman why Mexicans love the Beatles.
