Apart from Washington, D.C., Chicago is the first American city to host the NATO Summit. As world leaders arrived for the Summit yesterday, they were greeted by thousands of protesters and just as many police officers. Chicago Police have arrested five protestors who allegedly planned to throw Molotov cocktails at President Obama’s campaign headquarters and Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s home.
The protesters ran the gamut, from the Occupy Wall Street movement, to military veterans. Pfc. Vincent Emanuele told the Associated Press: “I’m out here because I’m standing in support of my brothers and sisters, specifically those who have served in Afghanistan and who are speaking out about the occupation of Afghanistan and who are standing in solidarity with the people of Afghanistan.” Jim Warren is a national correspondent for The Atlantic.
